Emergency Closure Notification Options:

In the event of  weather-related or emergency school closures, information will be communicated via the following channels:
Emergency Phone System In the event of an emergency, the district will initiate its emergency phone system to notify parents. All phone numbers on record for each parent will be called.

Because of the cost involved in using this system, use will be limited to emergencies. An early morning forecasted weather event will not be considered an emergency.

Listserv

The district will use its parent listserv system to notify parents via e-mail, assuming that power is available.

FlashNews Network

The district subscribes to the FlashAlert newswire, which distributes emergency information and news releases to news media outlets. As information is posted to FlashAlert, it is also accessible on the district's FlashAlert page

By design, the messages provided to the FlashAlert newswire are brief. FlashAlert and media organizations have developed a set of standard messages that school districts are asked to use when possible. This allows media outlets to quickly decipher the many messages they receive when multiple school districts have weather-related closures, and to quickly post the information on their news crawl with minimum editing.

Media outlets also request that school districts notify them only if schools will not be operating on normal schedules. They will not report that schools are opening on time. If no information is reported by media or on the district's FlashAlert page, it means that schools are opening on time.

Follow LOSD

The Lake Oswego School District will be using Twitter as an additional communications channel, enabling parents to receive urgent communications as text messages on their cell phones. Please use the following instructions to receive LOSD Twitter messages:

  • If you already have a Twitter account, simply follow "LOSD"
  • If you don't have a Twitter account, there are two options:
    • Go to http://twitter.com/LOSD and click on the green "Join Today" button. When setting up your account, be sure to register your cell phone number under "Devices" in the "Settings" tab. After setting up your account, search for LOSD (Lake Oswego Schools) under "Find People", then click on "Follow."
    • Send a text message that says "follow LOSD" to 40404. You'll receive a reply welcoming you to Twitter, and asking you to respond and select a username. LOSD Twitter messages will then be forwarded to your cell phone.
  • For additional information and assistance, see the Twitter help page: http://help.twitter.com/portal

Closure Procedures:
Closure Procedures

Severe weather, power outages, or other conditions may require schools to cancel classes, start late, or close early.

In most circumstances, the decision to cancel classes or start late will not be made the night before, but will be made before 6 a.m. on the day of the weather event.

When schools must close early during the school day, every effort is made to provide parents with as much warning as possible.

School will be in session if the majority of our students can travel safely. Because of the varied topography within district boundaries, hazardous conditions occasionally may exist in a limited area while roads in the remainder of the district are safe for travel. If parents believe conditions in their area make it unsafe for students to travel to school, the district will support their decision to keep their children at home.

If snow bus routes are in effect, students may have to walk to different bus stops.

Elementary Emergency Closure Plans

Elementary parents are asked each fall to provide a plan for their children’s care in the case of an unanticipated early closure. Parents are encouraged to review this plan with their children to minimize confusion and uncertainty. Phone trees are in place at all elementary schools to inform parents of early closures.

Extended Day Program

On days requiring a late start, Extended Day Program will be available one hour prior to the opening time of school.

If schools are closed, Extended Day is closed.

If school closes early, Extended Day will close at the same time. Parents of students in the Extended Kindergarten Day Program will be called and asked to pick up their children at the same time that schools close.

Pre-K Program

If schools are closed, Pre-K is closed.

If AM Kindergarten classes are cancelled due to a late start, Pre-K classes are also cancelled.

Early Morning Music, Community School, activities

On days requiring a late start, early morning string, band, and Community School classes will not be held.

If schools are closed, all before and after school activities and Community School classes are cancelled.

Snow Days and Secondary School Alternating Block Schedules When a school day is cancelled due to weather or other circumstances, secondary students will return to the block schedule day that would have followed the last day they were in session. (In other words, schools will not have the same block schedule two school days in a row.)
